Steam Courses
Animation
Learn and understand the basics of animation and storytelling through hands-on lessons
Why take this STEAM Course?
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of multimedia artists and animators is projected to grow eight percent from 2016 to 2026.
How does this work?
The STEAM Program is a virtual program and happens three times a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A designated Yazi Guide will provide you with the necessary meeting links and serve as your coach during the learning sessions.
The program includes a STEAM kit with all the materials and licenses required by the curriculum. Each participant is required to have their own personal computer/tablet to join the program.

Course Levels
Level 1 - Stop motion animation
The Animation Level I Kit will introduce students to video editing and stop motion movie making through different software options. Students will have multiple opportunities to create animations. They will animate their names being magically spelled out in playdough and create the pages for a digital animal alphabet book that displays letters turning into animals. Through their understanding of the elements of a story, they will work in groups to write and animate their own stories with defined characters, setting, and a plot that contains a beginning, middle, and end. At the end of each module, student-created videos will be shared with the class.
Level 2 - Discovering animation
The Animation Level II Kit will introduce students to video editing through Stop Motion Studio. Students will deepen their understanding of animation using 3D animation tools provided by anim8:3D and Toontastic. Students will become producers, directors, and voice actors after creating a dancing 3D character and telling an original story with 3D animation. These final products will be enhanced by the skill of summarizing and critical thinking when comparing stop motion, 2D animation, and 3D animation.
Level 3 - Animation station
The Animation Level III Kit will introduce students to animation creation using the Stop Motion Studio Pro app. Students will deepen their understanding of animation by creating flipbook, stop motion, claymation, and pixilation animation projects. Students will practice their communication and presentation skills by sharing these animation projects in a student showcase.
Level 4 - Anyone can animate!
Animation is simply an illusion of movement in visual environments. Technology provides every person with the ability to create “magical” animations that are used in entertainment, presentations, social media campaigns, videos, and mobile experiences. Students learn animation basics through traditional cel animation and stop motion photography. In 3D animation, students learn about its rapid advancement and influence throughout multiple industries. Using stop motion animation and a programmable robot, budding animators mix multiple mediums to create their own choreographed dance moves.
